Travel and Isolation Information
Expectations for All Students Travelling to Richmond
In accordance with the Quarantine Act, all travellers must have a 14-day self-isolation plan when they arrive in British Columbia and before they begin our academic program.
We have been developing a number of options for our students that are safe, comfortable and in keeping with the BC government guidelines.
Before Travelling to British Columbia and Richmond
Students or parents must download our RIE iCent app for vital information on travelling and arriving in Richmond. All parties should also read our Pre-Departure and Arrival Guide / 国际学生 出发前和到达指南 before leaving their home country and travelling to Richmond.
To enter Canada, students must:
- Hold a valid study permit or have received a final approval for a study permit
- Have a Letter of Support from the Richmond School District
- Download and complete the ArriveCan App
- Complete the BC Self-Isolation Plan
- Take a COVID-19 nasal swab PCR or LAMP test and receive a negative result within 72 hours of travel to Canada. More information, including what information must be included on the results notification, can be found on the IRCC website.
*Parents accompanying their minor child/children must have written authorization from IRCC prior to departure. More information on obtaining written authorization can be found on the IRCC website.
To receive a Letter of Support from the Richmond School District, students must:
- Download the RIE iCent App
- Read, complete and sign the Travel and Arrival Protocol Checklist (旅行和到达协议清单)
- Provide a copy of their BC Self-Isolation Plan
- Provide their flight details
Arriving in Canada
- All travellers will be required to take a COVID-19 test at their Port of Entry. Unaccompanied minors are exempt from new hotel requirements.
- Immediately after arrival in Canada, students MUST notify RIE through the Check In feature on the iCent app or by email at email@example.com
IMPORTANT REMINDER - ArriveCAN app
In addition to the steps above, students must use the ArriveCAN app to submit:
- travel and contact information
- quarantine plan
- COVID-19 symptom self-assessments
- submit your information before you board your flight to Canada
- be ready to show your ArriveCAN receipt when seeking entry into Canada - a border services officer will verify that you have submitted your information digitally
- confirm that you've arrived in Canada at the address you provided for your quarantine or isolation location within 48 hours of your entry into Canada
- complete daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessments during your quarantine period
- complete a self-administered COVID-19 test 10 days after arrival in Canada
What is Self-Isolation?

- Self-isolation means that you need to stay home and avoid close contact with others for 14 days. This applies to everyone entering Canada, even if they are symptom-free, Canadian, permanent or temporary residents.
- You can self-isolate in a home, hotel room, or cabin.
- You can self-isolate with a family member or a travelling companion.
- You have access to the same level of care and support as Canadians.
What self-solation doesn’t mean:
- Self-isolation doesn’t mean you are treated any differently from others. Everyone, including Canadians returning to the country, must go through this process. You will be treated with care and respect.
- You do not have to go to a hospital or government facility.
- You will be supported.

Please note that self-isolation/self-quarantine is mandatory and not optional. These measures are in place to protect you and others around you.
You will need to stay in your assigned room and keep away from others while practicing good hygiene. This means washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, showering every day, and covering your mouth and nose with your elbow (or tissue) when coughing or sneezing, and cleaning the bathroom after you use it.
How to Protect Yourself and Others during Isolation
- Wash your hands regularly and frequently with plain soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. Antimicrobial soap is not required for COVID-19.
- Cough and/or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to avoid coughing or sneezing into either your hands or into the air.
- Dispose of used tissues right away into a trash bin and immediately wash your hands.
- Stay in your room as much as possible and keep 2 metres (6 feet) distance between you and others.
- Use a separate bathroom if you can. Clean the bathroom regularly with household cleaning products. Flush the toilet with the lid down.
- Ensure there is air circulation in the room to maintain good airflow that is away from others
- Use a separate towel, kept away from others.
- Greet others with a smile and wave, do not have direct physical contact such as hugs and handshakes.
- Keep your personal items (i.e., toothbrush, cups, cell phones, tablets or laptops) separate from those belonging to others.
- Empty garbage frequently and wash your hands immediately afterwards.
- Do not share food or drinks with others.
- Do not share dishes, cups, eating utensils with others.
- Do not go to school or public areas
- Do not use public transportation
- Do not invite others into your room. If you need an item, ask others to leave it in the front door. Continue self-monitoring for symptoms. If you develop cough or fever and symptoms worsen, call and report to 811. If you are having trouble breathing, call 911.
What to do During Self-Isolation
Orientation for New International Students
Richmond International Education is preparing a fun and informative two week orientation program for new students. You’ll get to do things like learn more about Richmond, take a virtual tour of your school, make some new friends virtually, and even get a chance to chat to your vice-principal. We look forward to welcoming you!
In addition to the orientation program, be sure to stay connected with your friends and family from back home. During orientation we will also be introducing you to other new students attending your school, so you can look forward to making some new friends!
Find some time to go outside each day, if possible, while respecting the quarantine requirement as arranged and approved by the hotel or homestay. This may mean sitting in the backyard, or another area of the hotel outdoors. Do not go into other public areas in the hotel/house, unless you are given permission. You also cannot leave during the 14-day period.
Make sure to stay entertained by reading books, studying English, watching movies, or any other hobbies you would like to do in your room. Trying something new like yoga or working out at home is a great option as well!
